Tapolca – Lake Cave

The Tapolca Lake Cave is a favourite of everyone visiting the Balaton Uplands. You can explore it by boat, and it is famous for its dripstones. Because of the crowds and queues, it is worth buying tickets in advance.

If you take a walk in town, you will find the Mill Pond not far from the main square, with its charming water mill. Since 2016 the pond has been decorated by a delightful fish staircase, a work by Judit Varjas.

Balatonfüred

Balatonfüred is the most elegant resort on the north shore. Everyone who comes here strolls along the pier and the lakeside promenade. From the harbour, take a boat across the lake, or tour the town on the little train that leaves from the promenade. The Jókai Villa is well worth a visit. An easy hike takes you up Tamás Hill to the Jókai lookout with its wonderful panorama, then back to town through the romantic Koloska Valley – on foot or by car. In July and August, the Füred wine weeks let you taste the wines of local winemakers.

Tihany

Not far from Balatonfüred lies the Tihany Peninsula, rich in natural and historical sights. The abbey, the Echo Hill, the winding little streets and the geyser cones make it one of the most beautiful places in Hungary.

Zalaszántó Stupa

This shrine is one of the largest in Europe. The idea of building it came from a Buddhist monk in 1990. The interior cannot be visited, but the building is a unique sight from the outside too.

Excursions

Excursion spots with many hiking trails can be found in the Balaton Uplands, the Káli Basin and the Tapolca Basin.

Hegyestű

The most impressive natural and geological wonder of the Balaton Uplands. The two-level, half-cut basalt cone with its rock face of vertical basalt columns is a wonderful sight. You can climb to the top, where the view is unrivalled.

Folly Arboretum

A favourite excursion spot for visitors to the Balaton Uplands, cared for by the same family for generations. A beautifully designed and maintained arboretum full of special conifers. With different plants in bloom in every season, a wonderful panorama, its own Badacsony wines and food, and a special playground, it is not to be missed.

Szigliget Castle

The most visited castle of the Balaton Uplands, standing alone on a rocky ridge.

From the castle you get a wonderful view of the lake and the Tapolca Basin.

BADACSONY

The most spectacular landscape of the Balaton Uplands is formed by the coffin- and cone-shaped volcanic buttes of the Tapolca Basin. Badacsony is famous far and wide for its vineyards and wines. Past vineyards and wine cellars, you can reach the Kisfaludy House by car or on foot; small electric cars also shuttle visitors up and down.

From the Kisfaludy House you can hike up to the lookout tower at 438 m – a great experience.

Behind the Kisfaludy House lies a table-like basalt block, the Rose Stone, named after Róza Szegedi, the wife of poet Sándor Kisfaludy.

According to tradition, if a young man and a young woman sit on the stone with their backs to the lake, holding hands, they are sure to end up together.

SZÉPKILÁTÓ LOOKOUT

Located at Balatongyörök along Road 71, named after Sándor Kisfaludy.

It offers the most beautiful panorama of the lake.

Köveskál

Köveskál is the first village of the Káli Basin – a stronghold of gastronomy and the jewel of the basin. It has kept its natural beauty and unspoilt character; its birdlife and plants are a natural treasure.

Kékkút

It lies in the heart of the Káli Basin. The Romans settled here because of its mineral water spring; the water was the favourite drink of Empress Theodora and was named Theodora water after her. The spring still flows and can be visited today.

Szentbékálla – Sea of Stones

The Szentbékálla Sea of Stones is the most visited natural sight of the Káli Basin: a wooded area covered with huge rock blocks and the most important geological treasure of the Uplands. Its most famous formation is the Rocking Stone, which rests on three points and can be rocked.

Rainy-day ideas

Hévíz

Its thermal lake is known as a paradise for spa lovers.

Keszthely

The Festetics Palace is a baroque palace in the heart of Keszthely and still the most visited one. Its exhibitions, library and palm house are wonderful – a great rainy-day option.

Girls’ day out

Káptalantóti

Anyone visiting the north shore is sure to stop at least once at the Liliomkert market on the edge of Káptalantóti – almost a must on Sundays. It is a lively, busy scene, with local producers selling artisan food, cheeses, smoked goods, wines, pálinka, gifts and clothes. Well worth a visit – an experience like no other.
